Our team

Meaghan Martin, LCSW

Meaghan Martin received her Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from Simmons University and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). She worked in the social work field assisting in equine-assisted psychotherapy sessions for five years prior to graduating with her MSW. As a graduate student she trained at the Island Institute for Trauma Recovery in Saco, where she continues to work in addition to her equine-assisted practice. She has focused on working with LGBTQIA+ individuals and people who have experienced trauma. She is also a trained End-of-Life Doula and is prepared to help clients navigate facing a life-limiting illness.

Meaghan has been working with horses for over 25 years and has been fortunate enough to experience firsthand the powerful healing that horses can facilitate as partners in the therapeutic process. She is grateful to now be able to share this with others.

Meaghan blends equine-assisted psychotherapy, somatic awareness, and mindfulness-based approaches with psychoeducation, and she believes that the therapeutic relationship is the foundation for the rest of the work done in therapy. She is trained in trauma-reprocessing modalities such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR). She believes her role as a therapist is to support the client and guide them towards their own inner strengths and resiliencies while helping them to build skills and reprocess trauma. Non-judgement and respect are at the core of her work; she strongly believes that the client is the expert on their own experience.

Charlie

Charlie is a Standardbred gelding who was born in 2001 and has been with Meaghan since 2005. He is a gentle soul with a kind, steady demeanor. His loud breathing has helped many clients learn to attend to their own deep breaths, and his relaxed walk has aided in reprocessing of trauma.

Jackie

Jackie is our second “adjunct professor.” She’s a petite Quarter Horse mare who was born in 2014. She is sensitive, intelligent, and expressive and helps others learn to tune in to themselves and understand different ways to connect. Jackie prefers to work with clients who are spending time in the herd, rather than one-on-one or under-saddle.

Matisse

Matisse is a Paint x Percheron cross mare who was born in 2006. She has a sweet nature, both sensitive and grounded. She’s a wonderful teacher and her steady walking rhythm has carried many clients through reprocessing of past traumatic events.

Saxy

Saxy is a Standardbred mare who was born in 2006. She was rescued in 2022 and although humans haven’t always treated her well, she has a kind, gentle, and nurturing nature that draws people in. As a rescue with a traumatic past, Saxy is learning how to be present in her body again, and how to be fully herself. She is a wise partner in this work.

Rosey

Rosey is a Standardbred mare who was born in 2006. Meaghan has known Rosey since she was only a week old, and they have been together formally since 2009. Rosey is new to therapy work, but her kind, attuned nature makes her a natural partner.

Fun fact! Saxy and Rosey are half sisters and were born on the same day, on the same farm! They spent the first year of their lives as part of a herd of mares and foals before life took them in different directions. Now, they’re back together again.

Venture

Venture is a Paint horse gelding, and is in his mid-twenties. He’s one of two “adjunct professors” or part-time members of the therapy horse herd. He is a steady, gentle boy with a goofball streak. We’re still getting to know him as a therapy horse, but so far he has proven himself as a reliable reprocessing partner and all around Good Boy.
